Cost effectiveness 'more of a selling point' than green IT

18 September 2008

Companies are taking a number of steps to reduce their carbon footprints, but it has been argued they are doing so in order to improve their profit margin.

IT PRO has argued that while firms are taking steps that reduce their energy expenditure, the driver for such action is purely economical, with any environmental benefits being an afterthought.

Chris Green, editor of the publication, said; "These things ultimately are about improving the bottom line and that's really the selling point for most businesses."

He added that companies are moving to consolidate their data centre resources, use virtualisation and reduce the number of servers primarily to reduce the cost of their IT budget.

Computer retailer PC World recently announced the launch of a "green PC" which uses less power, though ComputerWeekly.com warned that much of the energy cost in the life-cycle of a computer is accounted for in its manufacture.
