Residents will save money through solar panels

04 July 2009

A group of residents in Leeds are hoping to save money on their energy bills after a number of solar panels were installed on the roof of their homes.

Tenants at the Oak Tree Court in Gipton are expecting to save £2,000 on their fuel tariff from the new panels, social housing group Connaught Partnerships said.

The energy-saving devices have been installed to help heat up to 60 per cent of the water supplies for the properties.

Shane Greaves, Connaught mechanical and electrical services manager, said: "With climate change, rising gas prices and the depletion of the earth's supply of fossil fuels renewable energy sources are a genuine alternative solution as not only do they have minimal negative impact on the environment but they also offer financial benefits.

"With the completion of the works at Oak Tree Court we are confident that Leeds Federated Housing tenants will enjoy the benefits of not only a cleaner form of energy but also vastly reduced energy bills."

Connaught began making the homes more environmentally friendly in 2007 when it replaced six boilers.

Meanwhile, a number of solar panels have been installed at a school in Tilehurst in Reading to encourage pupils to become greener.
