Energy costs for residents at a new development will be lower than in traditional homes thanks to solar tiles installed on the roof.
Residents at the new Alton development, managed by housing association Home, will not only benefit from creating their own electricity but could also profit from it.
As well as coming equipped with roof tiles to turn sunlight into electricity, the homes have a meter which allows the owners to keep track of energy use and energy generated by their tiles.
If the meter detects that they are making more electricity than they are using the household can sell its surplus electricity to the grid, with the amount they could earn set to rise under the terms of the Energy Act.
Alison Shelton from Solarcentury told 24dash.com: "It's great to see that residents here are going to benefit from free, clean electricity. Traditional energy prices are on the up, so solar is now providing more tenants and property owners with a secure electricity supply and moving people away from the risk of fuel poverty."
