There are now an estimated 12.2 million desktop computers in UK homes. UK households now spend over £800 million a year powering computers, printers and other home IT equipment, and on average in homes, running IT equipment makes up about 13% of the electricity bill.
Energy Saving Trust Recommended desktops need to meet strict criteria on how much electricity they use – not just when you are using them, but also when they are in ‘sleep’ and ‘standby’ modes.
An Energy Saving Trust Recommended desktop computer will use around 40 per cent less energy in a year than an average new computer. Over five years of use, this could save you around £70 in energy costs.
If everyone buying a new desktop computer in 2010 bought an Energy Saving Trust Recommended desktop instead, collectively they could save £28 million off their energy bills a year, and over 60,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2). 60,000 tonnes of CO2 is enough to fill 340,000 double-decker buses each year!
